Question 1

How do I know if my paint contains lead?

Accepted Answer

Homes and buildings painted before the 1970s are likely to contain lead paint, and older layers can sit beneath newer coats. A lead test kit gives a quick indication, while laboratory analysis of paint samples confirms the lead content. We test before quoting so the removal method matches the actual hazard.

Question 2

How is lead paint removed safely?

Accepted Answer

Methods are chosen to avoid creating lead dust and fumes. Depending on the surface, we use wet scraping, chemical strippers, low-temperature methods or contained abrasive blasting, with the work area sealed, HEPA vacuums for clean-up and waste bagged for disposal. Dry sanding and high-temperature burning are avoided because they release lead.

Question 3

Which standards apply to lead paint removal?

Accepted Answer

We work to AS/NZS 4361.1 for industrial applications and AS/NZS 4361.2 for residential and commercial buildings, and manage lead risk work under the NSW WHS Regulation. Each job includes a lead management plan, containment, air and surface testing where required, and documented clearance results at handover.

Question 4

Can we stay in the building during lead paint removal?

Accepted Answer

Usually not in the work area. Children, pregnant people and pets should stay away until clearance, as they are most at risk from lead dust. Work zones are sealed off and occupied parts of the building are protected. Surfaces are cleaned and tested before each area is handed back.
